Coffee Filter Wallflower

Welcome to my first how-to article!

At the moment I am living on the road (well, in Airbnbs on the road) and have limited crafting supplies to work with. One of the items in my travel crafting bag that I have been working with is coffee filters - cheap and incredibly versatile when it comes to crafting.I had a lot of fun during the past week learning how to make an array of different paper flowers using these filters, and the one that I'll be focusing on today is what I am calling the 'Coffee Filter Wallflower'. I'm calling it a wallflower because it just looks so great hung on a wall, especially if you make a bunch of them and put them together to make a statement photo wall for an event. The great thing about these coffee filters are that they are so easy to colour, by soaking in a little food colouring and leaving to dry. This also gives them some added texture.

To make a Coffee Filter Wallflower you will need:

  • Approximately 20 coffee filters

  • Scissors

  • Satin pin

  • Coloured paper for centre

How to make a Coffee Filter Wallflower

Start with a singular coffee filter

Fold the coffee filter in half, again in half to make a quarter, and once more in half to make an eighth. I use a paperclip to keep mine folded.

Use your scissors to cut the edge of your folded coffee filter into a rounded shape, as shown. Once you have done this, unfold your coffee filter.

You will need to repeat these steps with approximately 20 coffee filters, depending on how full you want your wallflower to be. As you work your way through, you will need to cut more and more off the ends of the coffee filter so that your end result has a layered effect. If you're looking for a time-saver, you can fold multiple coffee filters in a stack and cut them together!

Once you have finished cutting all of your filters, use a satin pin to drive a hole through the middle of each of the layers. The bead on the top will hold them in place, and the pin can be bent over at the underside. If you're making a photo wall, rather than bending the pin it can be used to secure the flower to the wall.

All that is left, is to create a centre for the flower. I cut a circle from some patterned paper, but you can get creative here with any colours and materials that you want!
